Christmas Island is a small island in the Indian Ocean, under Australian control. Its capital is Flying Fish Cove, and the official language is English. The island is located 2,600 km from Perth in Australia, 360 km from Jakarta in Indonesia, and 975 km from the Cocos Islands. It has a population of about 1,403 people and also hosts camps for refugees.
The island’s most amazing attraction is the annual migration of red crabs. Millions of crabs move from the forests to the coast for mating. This journey begins in October or November. Male crabs reach the coast first to prepare burrows. After mating, the males return to the forest while the females stay in the burrows to lay eggs.
Two weeks later, the females release their eggs into the sea and return to the forest. Baby crabs emerge after three to four weeks and make their way back to the forest.
People take great care to protect these crabs during their migration. Roads are closed, and special pathways are built to ensure their safety, making this a unique and well-preserved natural event
