POINT NEMO – Earth Cemetery of Space Vehicles

Point Nemo, also known as the “Space Cemetery Cemetery”, is an uninhabited area in the South Pacific Ocean. It is a region of the South Pacific Ocean east of New Zealand. It is located at a distance of about 2,400 km (1,500 miles) between Easter Island, Pitcairn Island and Antarctica.
Therefore, the humans closest to Point Nemo are often astronauts on the International Space Station.

In 1992, Harvey Lukatella, a survey engineer, computed a point computer program at the farthest point in the ocean from three equidistant land coordinates. No human is likely to go through those coordinates yet.

It is for these reasons that NASA and other space agencies have decided that Point Nemo is the ideal place to abandon old satellites and space probes.

The European Space Agency says more than 260 unused spacecraft have landed in the region since 1971. Russia’s Mir space station, and about 140 spacecraft have crashed into Point Nemo.
In 2024, the International Space Station will also be resting at Point Nemo.
