The greenbank Telescope

The Greenbank Telescope is one of the largest radio telescopes in the world that can be fully rotated.

The telescope is located on the Greenbank in West Virginia. Construction began in 1991 and was completed on August 22, 2000. The diameter of the dish is 100 meters. The collecting area of the telescope is 7854 square meters.

The telescope’s major contribution to the field of astronomical research. The Greenbank Telescope operates in conjunction with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA), Very Large Array (VLA) and Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) telescopes. At 450 feet high, the telescope weighs 8,500 tons. The Greenbank Telescope is helping scientists to detect astronomical phenomena such as pulsars and quasars beyond light years. In addition to radio waves, the telescope can also observe the universe at microwave wavelengths.

The telescope is operated by the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in the United States.
